The CIO Council Accessibility Community of Practice (ACOP) held a pilot workshop to discuss the Technology Accessibility Playbook and help federal agencies create their own Section 508 program action plan. Section 508 Program Managers, Web Designers, Procurement Specialists, and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Specialists from multiple federal agencies attended this unique event.
To encourage attendees to share their strategies for applying the Technology Accessibility Playbook to their Section 508 program, the workshop offered “lots of interaction, and everyone was open” to sharing and implementing new ideas, according to participants. Workshop participants learned how to establish a Section 508 team and program, how to assess that program’s development, how to develop actionable policy, and how to build an accessibility roadmap for their agency or organization. Participants also learned best practices for integrating accessibility into market research as well as how to build best practices into the technology lifecycle so that future revisions to a project are fully accessible.
The event was well-received and the CIO ACOP will followup with workshop attendees with future outreach, workshops and events. In describing the need for more workshops, one participant said, “Keep doing this...having a place to discuss these subjects is crucial.”
