GSA Government-wide Section 508 Accessibility Program

508 Facepalms or Opportunities?

While those of us who work in Section 508 understand the importance and scope of the role it plays, those who don’t may need a little help to understand. Sometimes you will get questions and comments that make you want to put your face in your hands and cry. Instead, we recommend that you take a deep breath and use it as an opportunity to spread understanding of Section 508. Here are “508 facepalms” that have been shared with us.

  1. Don’t worry, it's only for our 10,000 internal employees. Nobody outside will have any access
  2. “Can I get a waiver for that?”
  3. “It’s a CIO priority!”
  4. "But we don’t have any disabled employees"
  5. "I took one course in 508, now I am your agency subject matter expert"
  6. "There is not an accessibility issue since most employees can use it without a problem"
  7. "But I put a section 508 clause in the SOW"
  8. "Oh you mean section 508 of the ADA"
  9. "But I didn't think astronauts were allowed to be color-blind"
  10. But I can see it….
